This route is designed for third-country nationals temporarily transferred from a company established outside the EU to a branch, subsidiary or company in Malta belonging to the same corporate group; it is a temporary transfer permit used by multinational companies moving managers, specialists or trainees to their Maltese branch or subsidiary.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permit is granted for up to 3 years for managers and specialists and up to 1 year for trainee employees. It can be renewed only within that maximum duration; after the maximum is reached the holder must leave Malta or switch to another legal permit type from abroad. Time spent under the ICT permit does not count towards long-term residence or permanent residency.
