For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Travellers need a passport or travel document with a Machine-Readable Zone and at least 1 month's validity (extended-validity passports not accepted; children need their own passport), a complete itinerary with confirmed return tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility and sufficient funds for the stay (or an Immigration-approved sponsorship), compliance with the next destination's entry requirements, and a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or recently through a risk country (children under one exempt).

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Every traveller completes and submits the Traveller Declaration on the IMUGA portal (imuga.immigration.gov.mv) up to 96 hours before arrival, electronically and free of charge, and presents it at immigration on arrival; entry is granted at the port of entry after Immigration officers determine admissibility. Tourists can apply for visa extensions by logging into the IMUGA portal; since 23 April 2026 extension applications are expected to be completed within 48 hours. The official source does not state the conditions or maximum length of an extension.
