What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

PLS@XPATS is permission for a foreign professional to perform critical or emergency work during a short Social Visit Pass stay. Examples include maintenance, repairs, installation, testing and commissioning. Applicants must be at least eighteen, have relevant expertise and not be blacklisted; nationals of Israel and Afghanistan are excluded by the official FAQ.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The application is made online before travel with a company letter, the company's e-SSM registration and the current work/project schedule. The company need not already be registered with ESD Online. Approval is required before arrival and work permission is endorsed at entry.

Since 3 October 2022, Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) has implemented a facility for foreign professionals to apply to Work with a maximum of (30) days Social Visit Pass (PLS@XPATS) for emergency/critical professional task/work, from the date of arrival into Malaysia. The processing and final decision for PLS@XPATS will be at JIMs discretion. The Permission to Work with a maximum of (30) days Social Visit Pass (PLS@XPATS) will be endorsed at the Immigration Entry Point, subject to the Approval Letter. Effective 18 July 2024, the processing charter will be revised from Three (3) Working Days to One (1) Working Day upon a submission with complete document. To apply for Social Visit Pass (PLS@XPATS), you may visit JIM website at https://www.imi.gov.my, or via this link: https://mtp.imi.gov.my/plsXpats. What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The applicant must have expertise in a permitted field and be needed for critical or emergency professional work, such as maintenance, repairs, installation, testing or commissioning. Applicants must be eighteen or older, not blacklisted and not nationals of Israel or Afghanistan. What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Work is limited to approved critical or emergency tasks in the listed sectors. The facility covers Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan, not Sabah or Sarawak, and offers no Dependant Pass. This is not a general employment permit or a permanent-residence pathway.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The approval letter is valid for thirty days from approval and one trip. The permitted stay/work is at most thirty days from arrival, or the shorter nationality visa entitlement. No extension is permitted; a later new application may be submitted after the previous facility expires.
