For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

No advance visa or entry permit is needed for nationals of the 88 countries listed by the Chief Executive’s written instruction. Visitors not exempted must obtain an Entry Permit (visa-upon-arrival) at a checkpoint, prior Authorization to Enter and Stay via an agent, or a Macao visa in advance through a diplomatic mission of the People’s Republic of China; nationals of Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam must apply for a visa in advance.

    Visitors who are not exempted from a visa and entry permit are required to: Apply for an “Entry Permit” (aka “Visa-upon-arrival”) at any of the border checkpoints of the Border Control Department of the Public Security Police upon arrival at Macao; or Apply, by an agent, to the Residence and Stay Affairs Department in advance for “Authorization to Enter and Stay” (Note: Refer to the “Authorization to Enter and Stay” Section for details); or Apply for a ‘visa’ of the Macao Special Administrative Region in advance through a diplomatic mission of the People’s Republic of China or a representative office accredited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (Note: Starting from 1 July 2010, visitors from Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are required to apply for a Macao visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate.

Limit of stay on arrival depends on nationality/document: generally a maximum of 30 days; 90 days for passports of EU/Schengen member states and of Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Cape Verde, Dominica, Egypt, Grenada, Japan, Morocco, Republic of Korea, Macedonia, Mali, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Armenia, Serbia, Tanzania, Uruguay and Monaco; 14 days for Brunei and Kazakhstan; 3 months for Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and New Zealand; 6 months for British citizens with a British passport. The stay may not extend beyond 90 days before the passport's expiry.

    The maximum limit of stay in the Macao Special Administrative Region of all persons is restricted to 90 days before the expiry of their passport, travel document or other document accepted for the purpose of immigration control.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

A passport valid at least 90 days beyond the intended stay; an onward or return ticket unless proven resident of the Mainland or Hong Kong; and means of subsistence of at least MOP5,000 (stay of no more than seven days), MOP10,000 (up to fourteen days), MOP15,000 (up to twenty-one days) or MOP20,000 (more than twenty-one days).

Persons whose intended stay is longer than seven days but not exceeding fourteen days should have at least MOP10,000. Persons whose intended stay is longer than fourteen days but not exceeding twenty-one days should have at least MOP15,000 while those who intend to stay for more than twenty-one days should have at least MOP20,000;

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Where visa or other special advance procedures are exempted, the administrative authorisation is obtained upon arrival. Persons without a visa or prior authorisation can apply for Authorization to Enter and Stay (visa-upon-arrival) at the Visa Room of the checkpoint on arrival, and are granted Authorization to Stay for a maximum of 30 days if approved (individual fee MOP200 one-off / MOP300 multiple). Extensions are possible for persons permitted under Term 1, Article 29 of Law No. 16/2021 and Article 11 of Administrative Regulation No. 38/2021; persons with work or study endorsements staying over 90 days must apply in person for an extension before expiry.
