Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes: a signed hosting agreement with an approved research institute is required, with the research project accepted by the institute's competent bodies; the institute also drafts an individual financial statement of support covering living costs and return travel after the agreement is signed.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Family members of a researcher can be brought: the family-reunification supporting documents are not required when the family application is filed at the same time as the researcher's own application, and the minimum-stay condition for sponsors does not apply to researchers. The scope of the researcher's work rights is not stated.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The researcher permit is valid for one year, or for the research project duration if under one year, and is renewable. After five years of uninterrupted legal residence, the holder can apply for long-term resident status, with only half of the years spent as a researcher counted.
