What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

The qualifying activity is participation in the European Voluntary Service or a voluntary service scheme recognised by the EU or the Member State, covering practical solidarity activities pursuing objectives of general interest for a non-profit cause, on the basis of an agreement with the organisation responsible for the voluntary service.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The host is a volunteer organiser (the entity or organisation responsible for the voluntary service) with which a voluntary service agreement is concluded; the host entity electronically submits a mediation letter.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

The proof is a voluntary service agreement with the volunteer organiser, accompanied by the voluntary service scheme; the agreement must state the scheme name, duration, placement and supervision conditions, volunteering hours, resources for subsistence and accommodation and reimbursable expenses, and training (if any). The documents also include the host entity's mediation letter number.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The activities are not remunerated, except for reimbursement of expenses related to the voluntary service; the agreement must state the resources available to cover subsistence and accommodation costs and expenses to be reimbursed. The volunteer must also show enough funds and/or regular income. The official source does not state whether other paid work is allowed.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

The permit is issued or renewed for 2 years or for the total duration of the voluntary service if shorter, and may be renewed on the same conditions. Family members may not accompany the volunteer. If the conditions no longer apply, the volunteer must leave unless granted a permit on another ground (new application). Volunteer residence counts toward the five years for permanent resident status.
