What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the type of worker or employment this route is for.

Limits of the record
  • Not established: the correction failed a second independent check (NAO_SUSTENTA: 'General employment route rather than one limited to a named occupation' is inferred from 'in general, obtain', which qualifies the documents to obtain, not occupational scope; 'employee of a Lithuanian employer' also not in citations. Only the scope sentence is proven.)

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

A future employer is required. While or before the worker applies for a temporary residence permit, the employer must register the vacancy with the local Employment Service; within one month after this registration the employer may apply there for the worker's work permit or a decision that the work meets Lithuanian labour-market needs (processed within 7 working days). The employer also electronically fills in and submits a mediation letter whose number the worker provides. Workers in certain exempt categories need no work permit or decision, and their employer need not register a vacancy.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The decisive professional condition is the labour-market basis of the proposed employment: the source refers to shortage-occupation status or an Employment Service decision that the work meets Lithuanian labour-market needs.

  • Conditions
a decision of the Employment Service that your work will correspond to the demands of the Lithuanian labour market needs can be required (in case you apply for a temporary residence permit), or a work permit (in cases when you apply for a national long-term visa).
  • Procedures — National long-term visa
If your profession is included in the list of professions with a shortage of employees or if your profession is not included in this list, but a work permit has been granted, you may apply for a national long-term visa

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The temporary residence permit is issued for work with the particular employer. Changing the employer or employment requires a prior application and Migration Department decision, and family members cannot accompany the holder.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The residence permit lasts for the work-permit period, up to two years. Renewal must be applied for before expiry. After five years of continuous and legal residence, permanent resident status may be obtained, subject to a language and Constitution test.
