Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes: EEA/Swiss nationals need an employment contract of at most one year with an appropriate workload (or must meet the self-employment requirements). The official source does not state the employer requirement for other nationals.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

For non-EEA/non-Swiss nationals, only managers, specialists and other qualified employees with a completed apprenticeship or many years of professional experience qualify (Art. 14 AuG with Art. 5 ZAV); a workload of at least 50% is required for a short-term permit.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permit is granted only for a specific purpose of stay; third-country short-term residents cannot bring family members. The official source does not state further limits on the work allowed or any tie to a specific employer.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permit is granted for up to one year in total and is extendable once by at most six months on proof of extraordinary need; on expiry the person must leave regardless of entitlements (e.g. unemployment insurance), and a new L permit is only possible after an interruption of at least six months since deregistration and departure.
