Which nationalities and age range can participate?

The permit is open to nationals of any country (EEA/Swiss nationals under Art. 17 PFZG, others under Art. 19 AuG) who have a basic knowledge of German and want to improve it as an au pair. The au pair must be at least 18 and must not have reached 25 by the time the job starts.

What combination of travel, work, study or training does the programme permit?

The permit allows au pair work in a German-speaking host family combined with a compulsory German language course paid by the host family. The minimum gross salary is CHF 1,835 for a 30-hour week (pro rata for fewer hours), with a net salary of not less than CHF 700.00. The au pair may not be employed as a nurse, geriatric nurse, animal carer, or domestic or agricultural worker.

According to the government decree of September 5, 2006, the minimum gross salary for a 30-hour week is CHF 1,835. For a shorter working week, the gross salary is calculated on a pro rata basis of CHF 1,835. The net salary may not be less than CHF 700.00.

What are the defining limitations: quota, ballot, previous participation, employer limits, study limits or equivalent?

An au pair placement is not permitted where the host family and au pair are related or speak the same mother tongue. The host family's everyday language must be German with at least one native German speaker, and at least one minor child must live in the household (grandchildren, nephews or nieces do not count). The au pair must be cared for by one parent for at least half of working hours, and with two adults in the household at most 150% employment is permitted. The official source does not state a quota, ballot or previous-participation rule.
