During the research period the holder has unrestricted access to the labour market and may be employed. Family members (spouse, minor children and persons under the holder's or spouse's custody) can enter and receive a residence permit together with the researcher.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permit covers the period of the scientific cooperation agreement, up to five years, and can be issued again if the agreement is extended. After research, a temporary residence permit of up to 9 months is available to look for work or start commercial activities. Long-term resident status may be granted after at least five years of legal residence with sufficient financial means, sufficient Latvian and a place of residence.
