What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

Non-EU citizens who want to work in Latvia as employed workers; a temporary residence permit is required when the stay exceeds 90 days within half a year from first entry.

An employer is required: if the vacancy cannot be filled by national or EU labour, the employer's invitation for a residence permit must be approved by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs; only after that approval can the person apply at a Latvian diplomatic or consular mission abroad.

The right to work is tied to a specific position and a specific employer; changes are not allowed and a change of employment requires another residence permit. If the holder becomes unemployed there is no legal right to stay. Family reunification is possible.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permit is granted for the period of employment but not longer than five years; the identification card is issued for one year and must be registered (renewed) every year. Long-term resident status may be granted after at least five years of legal residence with sufficient regular financial means, sufficient command of Latvian and a place of residence in Latvia.
