Applications are accepted only from an employer, or an agent acting for the employer, who can meet the criteria. For agriculture, aquaculture and horticulture the employer must follow robust recruitment and vetting, have a genuine vacancy not created solely to facilitate a specific person’s immigration, pay no less than the going rate for a 40-hour full-time week (evidenced by a signed contract), and ensure employees are adequately accommodated.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The holder works for the employer specified on the permit, within the contract and job description, and only in the duties of that post. Holders cannot extend beyond 9 months, switch into another temporary route or bring dependants. Transfer to a different employer within the same temporary route is considered only in exceptional circumstances on a further work permit.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Permits can be applied for any period up to 9 months. At the end of the permit the employee must leave the CTA for at least 3 months before returning in this capacity. Time on this route does not count towards settlement (indefinite leave to remain); an employee can switch to long-term work permit employment if a prospective employer applies successfully under that route.
