Occupations eligible for the long-term work permit employment route can be found in Appendix 1. These are derived from the Standard Occupation Classification Codes assessed by the UK Migration Advisory Committee to meet Level 3 or above of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The applicant must hold a valid work permit issued under the Immigration (Work Permits) (Jersey) Rules 1995 and be capable of the employment specified in it. The employer must have a genuine vacancy meeting the skills and salary threshold; roles must not be created solely to facilitate a specific employee’s immigration.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The job must be at or above RQF level 3 (A level or equivalent) unless an exception applies, pay at least the minimum salary threshold or the going rate, whichever is higher, based on a 40-hour week (evidenced by a signed contract), and the employee must meet the English language requirement of B1 or higher.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The employee may work only for the employer specified on the permit and only in the duties of that post; they cannot switch employer in the first continuous 6 months. Dependants may come when the permit is granted for longer than 12 months; their permission is tied to the permit holder’s and they cannot apply in Jersey for work permit employment in their own right.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The initial permit is for up to 3 years, after which a further work permit may be granted; extensions of stay run for no longer than the approved employment period. Indefinite leave to remain may be granted after a continuous 5 years with valid leave in Jersey as a work permit holder (excluding temporary permits of up to 1 year and their extensions, and intra-company transfer leave granted on or after 1 January 2015), with no more than 180 days outside Jersey in any of the five 12-month periods, continued employer certification, and the English language and life-in-the-UK-and-Jersey knowledge requirement (Appendix KoLL).
