Which exceptional-talent, academic, scientific, artistic, technological, cultural or other profiles does the pathway target?

Professionals doing work that requires knowledge or skills in the natural sciences or humanities under a contract with a public or private organisation in Japan ("Advanced Specialised/Technical Activities", Highly-Skilled Professional (i)(b)), e.g. people developing new products at companies or international lawyers.

What achievements, recognition, awards, publications, reputation or other evidence establishes the required level?

Either a master's degree or higher with annual income of 2,000万円 (JPY 20 million) or more, or at least 10 years of practical experience in the intended work with annual income of 2,000万円 or more. Evidence: graduation and degree certificates, documents from former organisations showing period and content of the work, and documents proving the (expected) annual remuneration from the activity in Japan.

Is an employer, nominator, recognised body, peer group or government endorsement required?

A contract with a public or private organisation in Japan is required. The Certificate of Eligibility application for Highly-Skilled Professional (i) may be filed by the receiving organisation; evidence meeting the requirements is submitted to request recognition as a "Special Highly-Skilled Professional".

Can the holder change employer, work independently, establish a business or conduct other professional activity? What is the family position?

Holders may combine multiple residence activities; changing activity, including changing the affiliated organisation, requires a change-of-status permission. After 1 year or more as HSP (i) (Special Highly-Skilled Professional) they can move to HSP (ii), which allows almost all work-status activities alongside the HSP (i) activity. Family: the spouse may work, and parents may accompany and domestic workers be employed under certain conditions.

What duration, renewal and accelerated or normal longer-term residence pathway is officially stated?

After entering Japan, the Highly-Skilled Professional (i) status changes to (ii) after 1 year. The official source does not state the duration, renewal or longer-term residence pathway.
