（１）「高度学術研究活動」（高度専門職１号イ）：本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて行う研究、研究の指導又は教育をする活動（例：大学の教授や研究者等）
Recognition is points-based: points are given for academic background, work experience, annual income and other items, and a total of 70 points or more qualifies a person as a highly skilled foreign professional (only people who already qualify for a work status are eligible).
就労資格の決定の対象となる範囲の外国人の中で、学歴・職歴・年収等の項目ごとにポイントを付け、その合計が一定点数（７０点）以上に達した人が「高度外国人材」と認められることになります。
The research/education activity must be based on a contract with a public or private organisation in Japan. The official source does not state any separate nomination or government endorsement requirement.
（１）「高度学術研究活動」（高度専門職１号イ）：本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて行う研究、研究の指導又は教育をする活動（例：大学の教授や研究者等）
Holders may carry out combined activities spanning several statuses; in this category they may also start and personally manage a related business. The supported spouse and children may accompany; a spouse may work in activities such as Instructor or Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services without meeting education/experience requirements; parents (to care for a child under 7 or a pregnant spouse/holder) may accompany under conditions. The official source does not state the rules on changing employer.
１ 複合的な在留活動の許容 通常、外国人の方は、許可された１つの在留資格で認められている活動しかできませんが、高度外国人材は、例えば、大学での研究活動と併せて関連する事業を経営する活動を行うなど複数の在留資格にまたがるような活動を行うことができます。
本邦の公私の機関との契約に基づいて、大学等の教育機関で教育をする活動や、民間企業の研究所で研究をする活動などが認められます。 また、これらの活動と併せて、教育や研究の成果を生かして事業を起こし自ら経営することも可能です。
高度外国人材として入国する人の扶養を受ける配偶者・子のほか、我が国で就労を希望する高度外国人材の配偶者、高度外国人材本人若しくはその配偶者の７歳未満の子を養育し、又は高度外国人材の妊娠中の配偶者若しくは妊娠中の高度外国人材本人の介助等を行う高度外国人材若しくは高度外国人材の配偶者の親について、所定の要件を満たした上で、高度外国人材本人と共に入国することが可能です。
４ 配偶者の就労 配偶者としての在留資格をもって在留する外国人が、在留資格「教育」、「技術・人文知識・国際業務」などに該当する活動を行おうとする場合には、学歴・職歴などの一定の要件を満たし、これらの在留資格を取得する必要がありますが、高度外国人材の配偶者の場合は、学歴・職歴などの要件を満たさない場合でも、これらの在留資格に該当する活動を行うことができます。
A 5-year period of stay (the legal maximum) is granted uniformly and can be renewed. Permanent residence becomes available after 3 years of continued activity as a highly skilled professional, or after 1 year for those with 80 points or more (instead of the usual 10 years). After 3 or more years in HSP (i), a person may move to HSP (ii), which has an unlimited period of stay.
２ 在留期間「５年」の付与 高度外国人材に対しては、法律上の最長の在留期間である「5年」が一律に付与されます。 ※この期間は更新することができます。
３ 在留歴に係る永住許可要件の緩和 永住許可を受けるためには、原則として引き続き10年以上日本に在留していることが必要ですが、高度外国人材としての活動を引き続き3年間行っている場合や、高度外国人材の中でも特に高度と認められる方（80点以上の方）については、高度外国人材としての活動を引き続き1年間行っている場合に永住許可の対象となります。
（「高度専門職２号」は、「高度専門職１号」で３年以上活動を行っていた方が対象になります。） ⓐ 「高度専門職１号」の活動と併せてほぼ全ての就労資格の活動を行うことができます。 具体的には、「高度専門職１号イ・ロ・ハ」のいずれか又はこれらの複数の活動と併せて以下の在留資格で認められる活動も行うことができます。 「教授」「芸術」「宗教」「報道」「法律・会計業務」「医療」「教育」「技術・人文知識・国際業務」「興行」「技能」 ⓑ 在留期間が無期限となります。
