Which nationalities and age range can participate?

Japanese citizens aged 18 to 30 can apply for the Italy–Japan Working Holiday programme to stay in Italy. The Italian Embassy in Tokyo confirms that the bilateral programme became operational on 1 April 2026; the reciprocal Italian-citizen route is for entry to Japan.

What funds, insurance, onward travel or similar preparation is particularly important?

Under the general Italian working-holiday rule, which is not Japan-specific, the permit must be requested at the Questura within 8 working days of entry, with a copy of an insurance policy valid in Italy against sickness and accident risk, a declaration of hospitality with a copy of the declarant's identity document, and receipts for the €30.46 postal payment plus the €40 contribution. Requirements for the visa itself are set by each specific agreement. The official source does not state the funds, return ticket or insurance required for the visa under the Japan agreement.

How long can the person stay, can the programme be extended or repeated, and what happens when it ends?

The working-holiday visa lasts one year. Under the general Italian rule, the working-holiday residence permit cannot be renewed or converted. The official source does not state whether the programme can be repeated or what happens at the end of the stay.
