The foreign national’s specialization may be utilized for the training of and subsequent replacement by Iranians.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Under the Labour Law, a foreign national may work only with an entry visa carrying the right to do a specific job plus a work permit. If the employment ends, the employer must notify the Ministry of Labour within 15 days and the worker must surrender the work permit within 15 days, so the permit is tied to that employment. Holders of a work visa can apply for visas for their family after entering Iran.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Work permits are issued, renewed or extended for no more than one year at a time. A temporary work permit for urgent exceptional cases is valid for up to three months, with renewal subject to the Technical Board for Employment of Foreign Nationals. No longer-term residence route is stated.
