How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

For a residence permit for studies, the OIF page gives a minimum validity of one year, or the shorter training duration, and a maximum of three years, subject also to the travel document’s validity. It may be extended for one to three years at a time if the person still holds a valid permit and has resided in Hungary at least 90 days in any 180-day period; application is through Enter Hungary no earlier than 90 and no later than 30 days before expiry. After successful completion, a holder of a still-valid studies permit may apply for a separate job-seeking or business-starting permit if the intended job or business matches the level of study. This is an application possibility, not an automatic post-study status. For extension, the institution must provide an academic-progress statement; the page says the authority may refuse extension or revoke a studies permit if the student does not obtain a degree within one and a half times the programme’s prescribed period. The page also excludes holders of studies or mobility documents from a national residence card.

  • The degree-completion rule is stated in the generic studies section and does not clearly establish how it applies to a public-education pupil; no pupil-specific academic-progress threshold is inferred.
