The pathway is designed for guest workers whose purpose of residence is to perform actual work for or under the direction of others, for remuneration, under contract for employment relationship, or whose employment is based on an existing employment relationship with an employer established in a third country, in order to fulfil an agreement concluded with a Hungarian employer.

The applicant needs an employment relationship. The employment may be with a Hungarian employer, or with an employer established in a third country to fulfil an agreement concluded with a Hungarian employer; in the latter case the Hungarian employer is considered to be the employer.

The decisive professional characteristic is nationality: only nationals of countries listed in Annex 1 of Government Decree No. 450/2024 (Georgia, Armenia, Republic of the Philippines) may be employed with this permit. The minister responsible for employment policy may specify occupations in which a residence permit for employment cannot be granted, but no such communication has been issued so far. The official source does not state any qualification, experience or salary requirement.

The holder is tied to the employer in relation to whom the permit was granted: if the holder wishes to be employed by another employer or there is a change in position or place of work, an application for extension is required. Family members may not be granted a residence permit for family reunification, with a narrow exception for a child born in Hungary during the validity of the permit.

    Family members of a third-country national who is a holder of a residence permit for the purpose of employment or an applicant for a residence permit for the purpose of employment may not be granted a residence permit for family reunification. An exception to this is if a third-country national holding a residence permit for the purpose of employment gives birth to a third-country national child in Hungary during the period of validity of the residence permit, as in this case the child will receive a residence permit issued for the purpose of family reunification after notification on the child’s birth.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permit is valid for a maximum of 2 years and may be extended for another year; however, its validity may not exceed 3 years from the date of first issuance. Extension is only possible within Hungary via Enter Hungary, and only if the applicant holds a valid residence permit for employment and has resided in Hungary for at least 90 days in any 180-day period. Longer-term residence: holders of this permit may not be granted a national residence card.
