What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The pathway is for employees posted to Hungary for a limited period under an employment relationship with the posting business: in the name and under the direction of the posting business under a contract with the recipient of the service, at a work premise of the posting business group or the business, or posted by a temporary work agency or labour-supply business to a business established or operating in Hungary.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the work allowed, any tie to employer or sector and family accompaniment.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The posted-work permit follows the posting period and lasts at most two years. It may be extended for the same purpose within two years of issue, but its validity cannot exceed the first EU Member State’s residence permit. Extension is filed in Hungary via Enter Hungary while the permit remains valid, after at least 90 days of residence with it in any 180-day period, between 90 and 30 days before expiry; the travel document must remain valid at least three months beyond the Hungarian stay. The OIF page also says a holder of this posted-work permit may not receive a national permanent residence card. It does not identify a positive longer-term residence conversion through this route.
