Employment must stay in place for the residence permit to remain valid; if it ends the permit can lapse. Employment alone does not give a right to live in Gibraltar. British, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals need no work permit and can start work while applying; those who need a work permit must have residency approved and the residence card issued before starting work. The spouse or civil partner and/or children can accompany.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Unless otherwise stated, a residence permit is valid for one year. On renewal an employee must show the employee requirements still apply (except the age limit in regulation 7(1)(d)). The permit lapses 16 weeks after a Notice of Termination is filed unless the Director of Immigration and Home Affairs is satisfied there is a new employment contract. Gibraltarian Status can be applied for after 20 years for those resident from 6 October 2025.
