Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes. Workers are placed under an agreement between the Federal Employment Agency and their country’s public employment service; a concrete job offer or valid employment contract (place, nature, length, pay, hours, holidays) is required; the employer applies for the work permit at the Federal Employment Agency.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The Federal Employment Agency checks that the job meets the seasonal-work criteria; permits are subject to a labour market test unless the Agency has set demand-based admission numbers, and are refused once the Agency’s set number for the period is reached.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Only the seasonal job during the exact period stated on the work permit; the worker may not work longer or start earlier. An extension with the same or another employer can get an additional work permit within the maximum duration. The official source does not state whether family members may accompany the holder.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Work permit for up to 90 days per 180-day period; seasonal employment may not exceed six months in any twelve months; people who worked as seasonal workers in Germany in the last five years get preferential consideration. The official source does not state a longer-term residence direction.
