What education or training is this pathway designed for?

A stay in Germany to apply for and find a qualified vocational training place (Section 17(1) AufenthG).

    Are you interested in completing qualified vocational training in Germany but have not yet found a vocational training place? With a visa for the purpose of seeking a vocational training place under Section 17 (1) of the Residence Act (External link) <desc>box with arrow to the right</desc> (AufenthG) you can come to Germany to apply for a job and find a suitable vocational training place.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

The permit is for searching for a training place to carry out qualified vocational training; vocational training in Germany is either school-based or in-company.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

The applicant must be under 35, hold a school-leaving certificate giving access to higher education or from a German school abroad, have German at B1, and cover living costs via a blocked account of at least EUR 1,091 per month (2026) or a declaration of commitment.

Work of up to 20 hours a week is allowed, plus up to two weeks of trial work.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

Stay of up to nine months; a new permit can only be issued after the person has stayed abroad at least as long as the previous stay in Germany; switching is generally only to Sections 16a, 16b or 19c(2) AufenthG.
