02What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?
No admission is needed yet; the applicant must hold a school-leaving certificate that entitles them to study at a German higher education institution or attend a preparatory course for university admission.

03What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?
Applicants must meet the language requirements of the chosen study programme and cover living costs for the whole stay: a blocked account of at least EUR 1,091 per month (2026) or a declaration of commitment.

Work of up to 20 hours a week is allowed, plus up to two weeks of trial work.

Stay of up to nine months; the permit cannot be renewed for the same purpose; once admitted to a higher education institution or preparatory course, the person can apply locally for a study residence permit (Section 16b AufenthG).
