What education or training is this pathway designed for?

    (2) As a general rule, foreigners are to be granted a temporary residence permit for the purpose of school-based vocational training, if such training leads to a state-recognised vocational qualification as determined by federal or state provisions, unless the qualification pathway is primarily tailored to nationals of one specific country.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

Living costs for school-based training must be shown via blocked account, declaration of commitment or scholarship, at least EUR 959 net per month (2026); German normally at B1 unless tested by the institution or a preparatory course is completed.

    If you plan on taking part in a school-based vocational training programme , you can provide evidence of being able to cover your living costs by opening a blocked bank account, submitting a declaration of commitment , or through a scholarship. You must have at least €959 net per month available to you (as of 2026).

    Proof of language proficiency: You have the language skills required for qualified vocational training. You will normally require German language skills at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) . This is the case if the training institution has not yet tested your language skills or if you have not yet completed a preparatory German course.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

Issued for the duration of the training programme; after successful completion, up to 18 months to seek qualified employment (Section 20(1) no. 3); after completing training in Germany and working two years, a settlement permit is possible if other conditions are met.

    To complete school-based or company-based vocational training, a corresponding residence permit will be issued for the duration of the vocational training programme in question.
