How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?
Under the current German Residence Act §18(4), an EU Blue Card under §18g is issued for four years, or, if the job contract or Federal Employment Agency approval is shorter, for that shorter period plus six months, capped at four years. The official federal portal gives the same six-month rule. A renewal is possible subject to continuing legal conditions. A settlement permit under §18c(2) requires at least 27 months of §18g employment with qualifying pension contributions, simple German and the other cited §9 conditions; the period shortens to 21 months with sufficient German. The authority page describes those language levels as A1 and B1 respectively.
