What education or training is this pathway designed for?

Basic and advanced in-company vocational training, where the Federal Employment Agency has approved it or it is permissible without approval.

    As a general rule, a foreigner is to be granted a temporary residence permit for the purpose of basic and advanced in-company vocational training if the Federal Employment Agency has granted approval in accordance with section 39 or it has been determined pursuant to the Ordinance on the Employment of Foreigners or by intergovernmental agreement that such basic and advanced vocational training is permissible without the approval of the Federal Employment Agency.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

The applicant must have a specific (in-company) vocational training place in Germany; the Federal Employment Agency may have to approve it, checking that the trainee is employed under the same conditions as German apprentices.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

German is normally at CEFR B1 (if not tested by the training institution); living costs must be covered for the whole stay: for company-based training, a training allowance of at least EUR 1,048 gross or EUR 822 net per month (2026) counts as secure livelihood, otherwise a blocked account or declaration of commitment can top up.

    You have the language skills required for qualified vocational training. You will normally require German language skills at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) . This is the case if the training institution has not yet tested your language skills or if you have not yet completed a preparatory German course.

    you will receive a training salary, which is also considered as evidence. If your training allowance is at least €1,048 gross or €822 net per month (as of 2026), your livelihood is considered secure. Should your training salary be insufficient, you are allowed to compensate the difference by showing that you are in possession of either a blocked bank account or a declaration of commitment.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The permit is issued for the duration of the training programme; after successful completion, a job-seeker permit of up to 18 months (Section 20(1) no. 3 AufenthG) is available, and after completing training in Germany and working two years a settlement permit may be obtained if further requirements are met.
