Which nationalities and age range can participate?

The Working Holiday residence permit is available to citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Japan or Canada who are coming to Finland for a Working Holiday; Finland has a reciprocal agreement with these four countries, and citizens of other countries cannot be granted a residence permit on these grounds. The permit can be granted only once: applicants of all four nationalities must not have been granted a Working Holiday permit in Finland before. Australian citizens may work at most 9 months during a 12-month trip and only 3 months for a single employer (longer with one employer requires a residence permit for an employed person). Family may not come along: Australian applicants' spouse or child and New Zealand/Japanese applicants' dependants must not travel with them, and Canadian applicants' family members cannot be granted a residence permit on the basis of family ties.

What funds, insurance, onward travel or similar preparation is particularly important?

Applicants need a return ticket or sufficient means to acquire one, sufficient funds of about EUR 2,450 for the first three months and, for citizens of Canada, Japan or New Zealand, health insurance for the entire stay.
