How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

A first residence permit is usually granted for at most one year (shorter or longer depending on the grounds). An extended permit can be issued for up to four years, its length depending on the duration of the employment relationship. Longer term, this ground is accepted as a basis for a permanent residence permit: e.g. at least 6 years on a continuous (A) permit with 2 years' work history in Finland and B1 Finnish/Swedish, or at least 4 years on an A permit with taxable income of at least EUR 40,000. Migri lists this ground for permanent residence only where the employer or contractor has no place of business in Finland.
