What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

NM1 business visas with employment purposes are granted to persons who, by the nature of their occupation, remain in the country for one year without necessarily having to leave; separate requirement lists exist for employment with a private company, under the free-zone regime, with a multinational or transnational company, and with an international organisation or public institution.

A private-company application requires a job proposal from a company registered with the Ministry of Labour stating the position and base salary plus benefits.

For private-company NM1 the applicant submits evidence of job qualifications, including a résumé/CV and university diplomas; the employer must have a Ministry of Labour certification that it is registered in SIRLA and complies with Article 135 of the Dominican Labour Code on nationalisation of labour (certificate no older than 3 months).

The guarantor must guarantee that the holder will engage exclusively in the activity for which the visa was granted. Dependants can apply for a Dependency Visa (DPM) through a request letter from the person on whom they depend, who must prove holding a one-year NM1 visa (the letter then signed by the body on which the NM1 beneficiary depends).

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

NM1 (private company) is stated for one year with multiple entries. It is generally granted to people fulfilling fixed-term contracts with public or private companies established in the country and can be renewed for the same period while the contract remains in force. Once in the Dominican Republic, NM1 beneficiaries have 30 days to present themselves to the Directorate General of Migration (DGM) to formalise residence or temporary-permit procedures, completing DGM's additional requirements under the regulation of Migration Law 285-04.
