Limits of the record
  • Part-time programmes are generally excluded.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

Part-time study is not accepted. The applicant must follow the language of instruction well enough to participate actively. Sufficient funds are DKK 7,426 (2026 level) per month of study, with 12 months (max DKK 89,112) required for studies over a year; tuition already paid for the first semester is accepted as proof of funds. The student may not apply for public benefits such as those under the Active Social Policy Act, SU and housing benefits.

Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

Students in state-approved programmes get a limited work permit: 90 hours per month September-May and full-time June-August, also valid in the 6-month or 3-year job-seeking period. Students in non-state-approved EVA-statement programmes get a limited work permit only if granted or applied before 2 May 2025; those applying on or after 2 May 2025 have no right to work. Working more hours is illegal (warning, fine or revocation); unlimited unpaid voluntary work benefiting society is allowed. Family (spouse, registered/cohabiting partner, children under 18 at home) may accompany state-approved students, but not non-state-approved applicants from 2 May 2025.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The permit covers the nominal programme duration with active participation; it can be extended by at most 1 year (2 years total for pregnancy or parental leave), applied for no earlier than 4 months before and no later than expiry, and a programme change needs a new permit (the new programme may start while pending). Graduates of an entire state-approved programme can get a 6-month or 3-year job-seeking permit, generally granted with the study permit; EVA-statement programme students get 6 months only if they applied before 2 May 2025, none if on/after. Job-seeking gives 90 hours per month and full-time June-August; 3-year holders can apply for an unlimited work permit, and a job offer can ground a new residence and work permit.
