  • The page excludes some school levels and programme types; see the route-specific conditions.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

The educational programme must be approved by a state authority; if only the institution is state-approved, a valid statement from the Danish Evaluation Institute (EVA) on the programme content is required. Permits can cover primary education such as public schools, independent primary schools, continuation schools and youth schools, but by practice not below 9th grade. A basic programme at a vocational education institution is not covered, except as part of an international collaboration or exchange agreement.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

The student needs disposable funds of DKK 7,426 (2026 level) per month multiplied by the months of study, up to 12 months, documented e.g. by a bank statement no more than 30 days old. No funds documentation is needed if the programme fee covers tuition, food and accommodation. The student must speak and understand the language of instruction (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English or German) and may not receive public benefits.

Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

As a rule, a basic or youth programme student must not work in Denmark; in special cases a work permit can be granted on application (e.g. for vocational experience within a basic programme). Unpaid voluntary work benefiting society is allowed without a work permit. The permit does not allow the student's family to come to Denmark.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The permit is valid for no more than 1 year and cannot be granted to complete a full high school programme. It can be shortened to end 3 months before passport expiry. It lapses if the holder gives up the Danish address or stays abroad more than 6 consecutive months. The official source does not state renewal conditions or any post-study work or residence option.
