A job offer from an employer is central: the employer first applies to the District Labour Offices with a job vacancy; if it is not filled, the employer may apply for a non-EU national, and after a positive Labour Department answer the employment contracts are signed and stamped. The employer then submits the entry and residence permit application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department or through the District Aliens and Immigration Units of the Police, and must provide reasonable accommodation and a bank guarantee in case of repatriation.

The holder may change employer up to three times if they stay in the same sector and occupation. The only allowed change of sector is from domestic work to farming and agriculture. After three changes, the permit is not renewed unless the person leaves Cyprus for at least two years.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The residence and employment permit is granted for a maximum of four years; this maximum does not apply to jobs in farming and agriculture, domestic work, specialty cooks and chefs, priests and tourist representatives. After five years of legal and continuous stay the holder can apply for a long-term residence permit, showing stable financial means, health insurance and that residence was not secured by fraud.
