X2 is for short-term study in China, legally no more than 180 days.

Admission and the actual course are central. Stay expenses must be secured, but the cited national provisions do not set a uniform tuition, savings, insurance or attendance threshold.

X2 does not itself grant unrestricted employment. The off-campus work or internship endorsement provision concerns student residence-permit holders and is not an automatic X2 right. Family permission is a separate application.
第四十一条 外国人在中国境内工作，应当按照规定取得工作许可和工作类居留证件。任何单位和个人不得聘用未取得工作许可和工作类居留证件的外国人。
第二十二条 持学习类居留证件的外国人需要在校外勤工助学或者实习的，应当经所在学校同意后，向公安机关出入境管理机构申请居留证件加注勤工助学或者实习地点、期限等信息。
The issued short-study visa controls the stay within the short-term limit. For an extension, the applicant submits the Chinese education or training institution's current-study letter at least seven days before expiry; up to 180 days is listed, also subject to the original-stay aggregate cap. The official source does not state post-study work or residence options.
（十）持X2字签证者，应当提交中国境内教育、培训机构出具的在读证明函件。可以延长停留期限不超过180日。
需要延长签证停留期限的，应当在签证注明的停留期限届满七日前向停留地县级以上地方人民政府公安机关出入境管理机构申请，按照要求提交申请事由的相关材料。经审查，延期理由合理、充分的，准予延长停留期限；不予延长停留期限的，应当按期离境。
延长签证停留期限，累计不得超过签证原注明的停留期限。
