What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This permanent-residence route is for foreign senior managers, such as deputy general managers or deputy factory directors and above, or professionals at associate-senior level, such as associate professors or researchers, meeting the prescribed employment and residence history.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The applicant must be employed by an organisation meeting one of Article 8: an institution under a State Council department or a provincial government; a key university; an enterprise or institution executing national key projects or major research projects; or a high-tech enterprise, encouraged foreign-invested enterprise, foreign-invested advanced-technology enterprise or foreign-invested export enterprise.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The distinctive requirements are the qualifying senior role or professional level, four consecutive years in that position, at least three years of residence in China within those four years, and good tax records. The Chinese provision and English guide require careful reconciliation concerning equivalent salary/treatment.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Approval grants permanent residence, and Article 48 permits residence and work on the permanent-residence documents. A qualifying spouse and unmarried children under 18 may apply through the linked family route. Separate occupational licensing rules may still apply; this provision is not an occupational licence.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Permanent residence has no time limit, although its ID card is renewed separately. Adult cards are valid for ten years and minor cards for five years; normal retention requires three months per year in China, with the approved-exception rule of at least one year in five. Apply for renewal within the month before card expiry.
