Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?
Under the temporary policy effective 4 September 2026, a worker holding a valid Canadian work permit may study without a study permit in a programme lasting no more than six months, and only until that work permit expires if earlier. The worker normally remains bound by work-permit conditions, except conditions related to studying under this measure. For a co-op placement with a different employer or occupation, a new employer-specific work permit may be needed before placement; holders of open work permits do not need that new permit for the placement. These statements concern the work-permit-holder exemption, not every study-permit-exempt group.

Limits of the record- This temporary policy addresses only workers holding valid work permits. It does not establish work or family rights for other study-permit-exempt groups. Work outside the existing permit conditions is not granted by the study exemption.

Work permit conditions
Normally, you must meet the conditions of your work permit. Under this temporary measure, you don’t have to meet any conditions on your work permit that are related to studying.
It’s your responsibility to come to an agreement with your employer if you want to change any of the conditions of your employment contract. For example, to study, you may need to work fewer hours than the number listed on your employment contract.
