For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Burundi requires travellers to hold an entry visa ('visa d'entree') before travel, obtainable online, at Bujumbura's Melchior Ndadaye International Airport or at Burundian embassies. The CGM portal does not publish a nationality-by-nationality exemption matrix.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The multiple-entry visa allows unlimited entries/exits but caps the total stay at 90 days, issued as a 1-month visa renewable up to twice (so up to 3 months); fees are USD 90 for 1 month, USD 180 for 2 months, USD 270 for 3 months, and the overall validity window runs 1 to 3 months.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Required documents are a passport copy, a copy of any current visa, and a passport photo; some accredited organisations qualify for a fee waiver on presentation of a framework agreement between the organisation and the Government of Burundi.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The visa is applied for online via the CGM portal, at the international airport, or at a Burundian embassy; after payment, a certificate is issued and presented on arrival. The stay can be extended in-country via a separate 'visa de sejour', tiered from USD 10 for 5 days up to USD 210 for 3 months.
