For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Whether a visa is needed depends on which of three country groups the traveller's nationality falls into. Group I nationals need neither a tourist/visit visa nor an entry authorisation and travel on a valid national identity document or passport; Group II nationals need a tourist/visit visa or an entry authorisation for tourism or visit; Group III nationals need a tourist/visit visa, granted after the Dirección General de Migración verifies the requirements and authorises it.

Limits of the record
  • The captured law and regulation do not list which countries are in Group I, II or III — that list is kept by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Ley N° 370 Art. 21(III) and is not part of this source.
  • The source does not state the response time for a Group III decision beyond Ley N° 997's ten-calendar-day limit for DIGEMIG to answer the consultation.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The tourist or visit visa is for rest or recreation, and it does not permit any paid or profit-making activity, whether self-employed or for an employer. The transitory stay for tourism or visit repeats the same limit.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The tourist or visit visa is granted for thirty calendar days and allows the holder to apply to the Dirección General de Migración for transitory stay for tourism or visit for two similar periods. The transitory stay itself runs up to sixty calendar days on top of the thirty. Total stay for tourists is capped at ninety calendar days per year.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

For the tourist or visit visa the applicant must present a travel itinerary, an invitation letter from a person legally resident in Bolivia or a lodging reservation, and economic solvency proved by a documented sworn statement. General requirements include the sworn-statement form, a passport valid for at least six months, a yellow fever vaccination and/or other health certificate where applicable, a current photograph and proof of payment. On admission the traveller must enter through an authorised control post, hold a valid passport or travel document and not be subject to express prohibitions.

Limits of the record
  • The source sets out what must be presented to obtain the visa or entry authorisation and what is checked on admission; it does not publish a separate list of documents a traveller must show at the border.
  • No monetary amount is fixed for the economic solvency requirement.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The visa is granted by the competent authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Where the traveller could not reach a diplomatic or consular representation, the Dirección General de Migración issues an entry authorisation for tourism or visit, with the same effects as the visa, at land or airport border posts (and, for force majeure or unforeseen circumstances, at its central office or departmental administrations) for Group II nationals and, exceptionally with a reasoned authorisation, for Group III nationals. To extend, the holder applies for transitory stay for tourism or visit before the visa or authorisation expires, at the central office, departmental administrations or enabled border migration posts.
