Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Employers may apply for individuals who work for an overseas office of their company or for a service provider contracted to work for the Bermuda company, including travelling salespersons; other applications outside these categories are considered case by case by the Minister. Where the service provider may not always be the same person, the permit may be issued in the name of the foreign company, and only one representative may land per permit.

Only one representative of the foreign company may land per Periodic Work Permit.

Limits of the record

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Section 2.3 states nothing about the holder being tied to an occupation or sector beyond the employer who applied, and nothing about family. For sponsored dependants, section 5 of the same policy defines 'work permit' as a New Business Permit or a Standard Work Permit.

Limits of the record
  • That a Periodic Work Permit therefore carries no sponsored-dependant right is an inference from the definition in section 5; the policy makes no express statement about Periodic Work Permits and dependants.
  • The Partner Residence guidelines separately exclude Periodic Work Permit holders from sponsoring a partner.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Periodic Work Permits may be granted for periods of one, two, three, four or five years. After arrival, if the holder requires a stay longer than thirty days, the employer may apply for an extension of up to a further thirty days by submitting a Visitor Extension Application; the holder shall not be in Bermuda for more than a total of 180 days per calendar year. The official source does not state a renewal procedure or a longer-term residence direction.
