What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This is the general employer-sponsored work permit: an employer submits a request for a new work permit for an expatriate employee to be hired on the employer's commercial registration. It is governed by Decision No. (76) of 2008 regulating work permits for expatriate employees other than the category of domestic employees.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

For a standard Bahrain expatriate work permit, the employer applies through LMRA’s Expat Management System to hire the worker on its commercial registration and selects a permit period matching the employment contract. The employer provides the expatriate’s passport, a health examination for an applicant outside Bahrain (not required for a worker already resident in Bahrain) and any specialised-occupation approval; it pays administration and, for an outside-Bahrain applicant, vacancy-advertisement fees before verification and the permit fee after approval. The employer prints the work permit and, after arrival where relevant, the residence permit. LMRA currently lists 21 working days for an outside-Bahrain application and three for an inside-Bahrain application.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The page sets no qualification, experience or salary threshold. It requires an approval letter or no-objection certificate from the relevant authority for certain specialised occupations (for example teachers, doctors, engineers, designations in the banking sector) and, for applications for employees from outside Bahrain, a BHD 30 job-advertisement fee for the job-vacancy announcement.

See recorded sources
Limits of the record
  • No qualification level, experience, skill level, salary threshold or shortage-list criterion is stated for this route.
  • The page states only that the job-advertisement fee must be paid; it does not state what the job-vacancy announcement requires or for how long it must run.
  • The page does not name which occupations count as “specialized” beyond the four examples given.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permit attaches the employee to the sponsoring employer's commercial registration. An expatriate employee may transfer to another employer without cancelling the existing permit, but before 12 months under the current permit the employer may approve or reject the transfer, while after 12 months the employer may only approve it directly or after the notice period and the system approves it automatically if the employer does not act within seven days. Occupation is not fixed: the employer may change it without cancelling the permit. Dependants' permits exist; a spouse's dependant permit requires the employee's monthly net income registered with the Social Insurance Organization to be BHD 400 or more, and a wife on a family visa cannot work unless the visa is changed to a work permit or a Work Approval for Dependants is granted.

Limits of the record
  • The captured pages do not state any sector restriction attached to the permit.
  • The captured pages do not establish which family members other than a spouse and dependants named in LMRA's services may accompany the holder.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Work permits are issued for six months, one year or two years, and the period chosen must match the period in the employment contract. The employer renews for 6 months, 1 year or 2 years at BHD 52.5, BHD 105 and BHD 210 respectively; a 2-year or 1-year permit may be renewed 6 months before expiry and a 6-month permit 5 months before expiry, and dependants' permits are renewed with the employee's. The official source does not state a longer-term residence direction from this work permit.

Limits of the record
  • No permanent-residence or long-term progression route from this work permit is stated on the captured LMRA pages.
  • NPRA separately offers a Golden Residency for foreign residents in Bahrain (employees/retirees), described as a permanent residency and requiring a salary certificate of minimum BHD 2000, but no captured page states that it is a progression from this work permit.
  • The captured pages do not state any limit on the number of renewals.
