All non-citizens need a visa or permission to enter Australia. This stream is not itself an entry permission: the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream (apply in Australia) is for people already in Australia who want to stay as a tourist, to visit family and friends or for purposes other than business or medical treatment, and the applicant must be in Australia when applying and when the application is decided.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The stay is up to 12 months, and the holder must only intend to stay temporarily in Australia; unless exceptional circumstances apply, the visa will not be granted to a Visitor, Work and Holiday, Working Holiday or bridging visa holder if the grant would result in staying in Australia for more than 12 consecutive months.

To apply online in Australia, the applicant must hold a substantive visa or one that ceased within the last 28 days (otherwise the department assesses whether the lack of a substantive visa was beyond the applicant's control or whether there are compelling reasons to grant the visa); the visa is not granted to someone whose current or last visa was a Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) in the Domestic worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream. Applicants must also have, or have access to, enough money to support the stay, and must meet health and character requirements.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Applicants apply online and must be in Australia both when they apply and when the application is decided; the cost is described as 'From' a base figure, with concessions in limited circumstances (including a lower cost for eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens from 1 July 2026). For applicants under 18 the visa might not be granted if that would not be in the child's best interests.
