For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

This is the Visitor visa (subclass 600) — an umbrella temporary entry permission covering several distinct streams (Tourist apply-outside-Australia, Tourist apply-in-Australia, Business visitor, Approved Destination Status, Frequent traveller, Sponsored family), each with its own conditions, cost and stay length, for people visiting Australia for up to 3, 6 or 12 months. Eligible passport holders may instead qualify for the simpler Electronic Travel Authority (601) or eVisitor (651) visas.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The permitted purpose spans the underlying streams: tourism, cruising or holidaying, visiting family and friends, limited business visitor activity (with no work or selling of goods/services), an organised tour for eligible Chinese citizens under Approved Destination Status, frequent tourism/business visits under the Frequent traveller stream, and visits to sponsored family members under the Sponsored family stream.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Stay length varies by stream: up to 12 months for the two Tourist streams and the Sponsored family stream, up to 3 months per entry for the Business visitor stream, up to 3 months per entry within a validity of up to 10 years for the Frequent traveller stream, and for the period or until the date specified in the grant letter for the Approved Destination Status stream.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Across all streams the applicant must be a genuine visitor and have enough funds to support the stay and to leave Australia; most streams also require the applicant to be outside Australia both when applying and when the application is decided, an exception being the Tourist stream (apply in Australia), which requires the opposite — being in Australia at both points, typically for someone extending a stay on an expiring visa.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Applicants choose and apply for the specific stream matching their circumstances; costs range from around AUD250 for most streams up to AUD630 for the Tourist stream applied for onshore and AUD1,845 for the Frequent traveller stream (with concessions in limited circumstances, including a lower cost for eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens from 1 July 2026). The Sponsored family stream may additionally require the sponsor to pay a security bond. Someone extending a stay on an expiring visa typically uses the Tourist stream (apply in Australia).
