What education or training is this pathway designed for?

The Training visa allows the holder to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve their skills for their job, area of tertiary study or field of expertise, or to complete a professional development training program in Australia. It covers three types of occupational training: occupational training required for registration; occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation; and occupational training for capacity building overseas, which includes overseas qualification, government support or professional development. The visa is not for ongoing work in Australia and is not intended to be used to fill workforce shortages.

The route requires an approved sponsor and a nomination covering the specific workplace-based training activity.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

The applicant must meet the health, character and genuine-temporary-entrant requirements, hold adequate health insurance for the stay, have functional English and have enough funds to financially support themselves (and any accompanying family members) throughout the stay. Character applies to the applicant and any family member aged 16 or over who applies for the visa. The visa is not intended to fill workforce shortages. Changing training organisation or training programme requires a new nomination, and changing sponsor requires the new sponsor to submit that nomination.

Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

All work undertaken in Australia on this visa must be paid. Family members of the family unit can be included in the application and must also meet health and character requirements (family members outside Australia when applying may also need to meet health requirements). Family members not included at first lodgement can later apply as subsequent entrants using the Temporary Work and Activity Visa (Subsequent Entrant) form, provided they were listed on the nomination form (where the sponsor is not a Commonwealth Government agency) or the sponsor confirms it will sponsor them.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

This is a temporary visa granting a stay of up to 2 years, and it cannot be extended — a new visa application is required to stay longer, and a new Training visa application needs continuing sponsorship (with an explanation if the original training period was not completed). The applicant can travel outside Australia and return as many times as they want while the visa is valid, with no visa label placed in the passport.
