Which nationalities and age range can participate?

Applicants must have previously held 2 subclass 417 visas (or hold a qualifying bridging visa from the second visa's expiry), hold a substantive visa (or have had one expire less than 28 days ago) if in Australia, hold a passport from an eligible country/jurisdiction, be aged 18 to 30 (or up to 35 for some passport countries), have completed 6 months of specified subclass 417 work (waived for UK passport holders applying on or after 1 July 2024), not be accompanied by dependent children and apply alone. They must also have complied with all conditions on the second Working Holiday visa.

What combination of travel, work, study or training does the programme permit?

The Third Working Holiday visa lets the holder have a third working holiday in Australia. Holders can do any kind of work, usually only for the same employer for 6 months, and can work another 6 months with an employer they worked for on their first and/or second visa. They can study for up to 4 months (17 weeks) and travel to and from Australia as many times as they want. A fourth Working Holiday visa cannot be granted to someone who has already held 3 Working Holiday visas in Australia.

What are the defining limitations: quota, ballot, previous participation, employer limits, study limits or equivalent?

Holders can do any kind of work, usually only for the same employer for up to 6 months, and can study for up to 4 months (17 weeks). This is the terminal stream of the programme: a fourth Working Holiday visa cannot be granted once three have already been held.

What funds, insurance, onward travel or similar preparation is particularly important?

Applicants must have enough money to support themselves while in Australia and to leave Australia at the end of their stay; this is usually about AUD5,000 for the initial stay, plus the fare to where they are going after leaving Australia. They must also show they have enough money to buy a ticket to leave Australia at the end of their stay, or that they already have the ticket. Applicants applying in Australia do not need to provide evidence of funds. The Department strongly recommends taking out health insurance, as holders are personally liable for all their healthcare costs while in Australia. The official source does not state health insurance as a mandatory requirement.

How long can the person stay, can the programme be extended or repeated, and what happens when it ends?

This is a temporary visa granting a stay of 12 months, with the exact start date depending on the holder's circumstances at grant (from the second visa's expiry, from grant date, or from entry if applying from outside Australia — entry must occur within 12 months of grant). The visa cannot be extended, and — unlike the first and second Working Holiday visas — there is no further Working Holiday visa available afterwards; a holder wanting to stay longer must apply for a different visa type.
