Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The applicant must be sponsored by a temporary activities sponsor approved by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) as a PALM scheme employer, and must have received an offer of employment for an approved PALM scheme work placement and a PALM scheme recruitment approval letter from the sponsor. While holding the visa, the holder must continue to be employed by the sponsor or another employer supported under an arrangement with DEWR, and may only change employment if DEWR approves the change.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The applicant must be a citizen and resident of a participating PALM scheme country and meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the PALM scheme as a worker, which include minimum age requirements, adequate skills to perform the position, English language skills appropriate to the tasks to be performed, and good character. Holders may only work in the position and industry the visa was granted for. The official source does not state specific occupations, qualifications, experience or salary levels.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Selected long-term PALM scheme workers on contracts of one to four years may bring family to Australia through the PALM scheme family accompaniment pilot, applying as subsequent entrants; short-term PALM scheme workers cannot bring family to Australia on this visa. The official source does not state the work allowed or whether the holder is tied to an employer, occupation or sector.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a temporary visa valid until a specified date, which may be up to 4 years; holders must return home when their work contract ends, regardless of the length of the visa. Short-term workers cannot spend more than 9 months in Australia and must then spend at least 3 months outside Australia before returning under another PALM scheme work contract; after each long-term work contract (maximum 4 years in Australia) workers must spend at least 6 months outside Australia. The visa cannot be extended. Under the PALM scheme Approved Employer Guidelines, a short-term worker who has been offered a long-term PALM scheme work contract, or a long-term worker who has been offered a contract extension and whose total time in Australia will be less than 4 years, may be able to stay longer by applying for a new PALM stream visa. The official source does not state a longer-term residence direction.
