The applicant must be 35 years of age or under when they apply (under 50 is allowed only if holding a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport). They must be in Australia (not in immigration clearance) when they apply, hold an eligible visa (an eligible Student visa, or a Bridging Visa A/B or substantive visa held after a Student visa within the past 6 months), have completed their course within 6 months of applying, and have been awarded an associate degree, diploma or trade qualification closely related to a nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

The applicant can include members of their family unit in the application when they apply, if the family members are in Australia; children can be added to the application until a decision is made, but no other family member can be added during that period. Family members can also be added after grant as subsequent entrants (from in or outside Australia), and must meet health and character requirements. How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a temporary visa granted for 18 months; Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay up to 5 years. The visa cannot be extended, but the holder may be eligible for other skilled work visas. A person who previously held a subclass 485 or 476 visa as a primary applicant cannot be granted this visa as a primary applicant again. Current and future Temporary Graduate visa holders from Hong Kong may have a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years. The official source does not state a pathway to permanent residence for other holders.
