What sporting level, achievement, professional status, recognition or other sports-specific condition distinguishes the pathway?

Sports trainees must be currently competing or adjudicating at Australian national level, or be endorsed by a peak sporting body as having the potential to do so, and must undertake full-time, structured sports training aimed at a high-performance outcome with an internationally recognised sports training organisation. What sporting/work activity is permitted, what club or activity restrictions exist, and what is the family position?

The holder must not work outside the specified sporting activities. Members of the family unit can be included in the application. Family members applying for the visa must also meet the department's health and character requirements (character required for those aged 16 or over). Applicants and family members aged 18 or over must acknowledge the Australian Values Statement, confirming respect for the Australian way of life and Australian laws. A separate visa application charge applies per family member.

How long does the status last, how does renewal or change of club work where stated, and what longer-term residence possibilities exist?

This is a temporary visa granted with multiple entry, for up to 2 years, with the exact length based on the approved sporting activity; sportspeople at local/regional competitions are normally expected to depart at season's end. The visa cannot be extended by applying for a further grant of this same stream — a new visa application is required, and the GTE requirement generally caps cumulative temporary stays on this pathway at 4 years. If overseas at grant, the stay period starts on entry to Australia; if in Australia, it starts on grant.
