Researchers must be or have been employed as an academic at an overseas tertiary or research institution and have a record of significant achievement in their field. Research students or recent graduates must be a student of a foreign educational institution or have graduated within the last 12 months, and be invited to undertake research related to their field of study; if not yet graduated, the research must meet course requirements for the overseas qualification. What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Members of the family unit can be included in the visa application and stay in Australia with the main applicant for up to 2 years; family members must also meet the health and character requirements, the character requirement applying to those aged 16 and over. The official source does not state what work the visa allows or any tie to an employer or occupation.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a temporary visa with a maximum stay of 2 years (the holder would usually observe or take part in the research for up to 12 months) and no permanent-residence pathway. It cannot be extended by re-applying for this same visa; a new application is needed to stay longer to complete the research, and the department generally does not let a temporary resident extend their overall stay in Australia beyond 4 years by applying for this visa again.
