What education or training is this pathway designed for?

The pathway is for enrolment in an eligible course of study in Australia, held with a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). School students (outside exchange programmes) face age-by-year-level caps: under 17 starting Year 9, under 18 starting Year 10, under 19 starting Year 11, under 20 starting Year 12.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

The applicant must maintain enrolment in a CRICOS-registered course (a CoE that is cancelled or completed is no longer valid), maintain Overseas Student Health Cover for the whole stay and show enough money to cover the stay (the minimum living-costs figure is not stated on the eligibility page). The applicant must be a genuine student and meet health and character requirements (character required for those aged 16 or over). Applicants under 18 must have adequate welfare arrangements in place. English language evidence may be required, including after lodgement.

Students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while a course is in session, with no limit for masters-by-research or doctoral students and their families. Family members can be included: a partner, and a dependent child (of the applicant or partner) who is unmarried and has not turned 18. A child who turns 18 before the visa is finalised cannot be granted this visa and must apply separately. Family members must be declared even if not travelling initially, can also apply later as subsequent entrants, and must meet health and character requirements.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

This is a temporary visa for up to 6 years, with the exact length set by the course type and length (primary school children starting in years 1-4 are generally granted a maximum of 3 years). To continue studying, a new Student visa is required; those close to graduation may instead qualify for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) bridge, and recent graduates of specific Australian qualifications may qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). The visa allows unlimited travel in and out of Australia while valid, with no visa label placed in the passport.
