What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

Applicants must be nominated by an approved sponsor to work in an ANZSCO-listed occupation in Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 (excluding Groups 3, 7 or 8), be paid at least the Specialist Skills Income Threshold, have at least 1 year of relevant work experience, undergo a skills assessment if required (commenced within 3 years before application), work only for the sponsor (or associated entity, with exemptions), and meet English language requirements unless exempt. There is no age requirement.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes. Before the applicant can apply, the proposed employer must lodge a nomination application, which it can do only if it is an approved sponsor or has at least lodged an application to become a Standard business sponsor. The nominated position must be in an ANZSCO occupation outside Major Groups 3, 7 or 8, with a nominated salary that meets the Specialist Skills Income Threshold. The employer's nomination must be approved before the visa can be granted. The holder must be employed in the nominated occupation and, with an Australian business sponsor, in that business or an associated entity; with an overseas business sponsor, in that business only. Some occupations may be exempt from this criterion.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The stream is for occupations listed in ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6, with a salary that meets the Specialist Skills Income Threshold. The applicant needs at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, and some applicants must undergo a mandatory skills assessment depending on the nominated occupation. The official source does not state the amount of the Specialist Skills Income Threshold.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The visa is restricted to the sponsoring employer's nominated occupation, and the holder must work only for the sponsor or an associated entity, with exemptions. Family members (secondary applicants) can be included in the visa application, but not after it is submitted; family members not included can later apply as a subsequent entrant.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a temporary visa. The holder can stay for the period the employer nominates, up to a maximum of 4 years, or up to 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders. The visa cannot be extended; to keep working for the existing employer, the employer must submit a new nomination and the holder must apply for a new visa. The employer may be able to sponsor the holder for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186).
